Loose cords, ropes, straps, and hoses can become a tangled mess and slow down rescue efforts. We have been experimenting for some time with several types of binding ties to cleanly secure base straps which are attached to the Res-Q-Jack® stabilization stands.
We’ve found that it takes a pretty tough tie to survive the harsh environment of vehicle rescue. The violent loads and chemical exposures demand durability. We thought we had the right solution when we discovered an elastic EPDM rubber band. The elasticity kept the rolled strap tight enough to withstand the bumps and bounces while the material characteristics provided the necessary chemical resistance.
So what’s the problem?
They get lost ! When things get rolling during a call, little attention is paid to these small items which perform no direct role in the rescue operation. If the lost bands do not get promptly replaced, we are back to the tangled mess that will cause frustration and possible trouble for us at the next call. If they do get replaced it’s a hassle and it costs more money.
So what’s the solution?
Stretch wrap ! It’s tight, it’s cheap, it’s disposable, it’s quick, and it keeps objects visible where a bag or box tends to conceal vital rescue tools. Stretch wrap forms a tight package, yet it is a wrap which is easily broken to deploy the wrapped item.
Another nice feature of stretch wrap is that it leaves no sticky film on your item like various tapes often will.
For wrapping straps, we use 3" wide rolls of stretch wrap. One way to apply the material is to use a where the opposite side being held is free from obstruction to allow a wrapping motion without interference. The direction the roll is unwrapped will affect how tightly the object is wrapped. Experience will quickly show which direction works best. The handle is not necessary. The wrap is easily applied without a handle as well.
Applications we currently use stretch wrap in include securing Res-Q-Jack® cam buckle base straps, ropes, power cords, hoses, and ratchet straps. We also wrap our pickets and base stakes together in our equipment truck to keep them from rattling around. Other potential applications may include property protection from water, patient packaging (consult with trained medical care providers), or maybe sharp protection when combined with packing foam.
