Modified 4-Point Side Resting Vehicle Lift
by Cris Pasto
Recently, I was on the phone with Mike Curry, a colleague out of the Buffalo, NY area. He uses the Res-Q-Jack® stabilization equipment extensively. I asked Mike if he had been doing much with the 4-point side resting lift. He replied that he was, however, he does it a little differently. The setup, up until now, that I focused on involved two jack stands on one side and two adjustable stands on the opposite side. This would have the effect of lifting the entire vehicle when the jacks were operated. This is great if you need to lift the entire vehicle. However, there may be many instances where it is only the front or the rear of the vehicle the requires lifting. This is where Mike’s method comes in handy. He places the jack stands across from each other and the adjustable stands across from each other. Naturally, the jack stands would be at the end of the vehicle to be lifted. The photos here show this technique applied to the rear end of a vehicle. Note that the cribbing was left out to better illustrate the ground clearance created. Always crib as you lift. A good deal of room was created with yet another six inches of travel available from the jacks. Another picture shows the vehicle tied to a pole up hill and in front of the vehicle to restrain front to rear movement of the vehicle.
