FD Stafford, VA

Due to the number of MVA's Stafford Volunteers respond to, it was decided to put together a Vehicle Extrication Training Day. The department acquired 5 vehicles to train with and was able to once again utilize our extrication pad that was constructed by dedicated members.

We extended the invitation to Mt. View Volunteers who took us up on our offer and brought Wagon and Utility 4 with 6 volunteers. Captain Schmidt, Lieutenant Dunstan, and Master Technician MacKay led the drill and taught the group vehicle stabilization and extrication techniques.

The first part of the morning consisted of a powerpoint presentation, while the remainder of the morning consisted of stabilization of roof resting vehicles and vehicles on their sides utilizing PARATECH Rescue Struts and Res-Q-Jack's. We also utilized the high pressure air bags to lift a vehicle on it's roof. After lunch, crews performed dash lifts, "5th Door" sidewall removals, roof removals, and tunneling techniques.

The final scenario consisted of one vehicle inverted on top of another vehicle with entrapment in both vehicles. All personnel worked together to stabilize the vehicles and complete this challenging extrication. All in all the day was very beneficial in the fact that everyone worked together, learned something, and had fun.
