Dale City
Fire Department Units Dispatched to I-95 for
a reported ALS Auto Accident with 5 Trapped....Since the being of the
Labor Day holiday weekend had already been busy for many units in the
county it continued into late Friday night and Saturday morning.Around
0034 hours PWC commutations alerted units of a reported overturned
vehicle with possible 5 occupants trapped on Interstate 95 south bound
south of route 234. Units on the original dispatched units were Wagon
517, Rescue 510, Medic 553, Ambulance 512, and BC507. Wagon 512 who had
just cleared a call in company 3’s area added on as well as RC503 and
RC517.
Rescue 510 arrived first on the scene and gave the proper
location at the truck scales. After a quick evaluation of the scene,
Rescue 510’s officer advised that there was one van on its side up
against a light pole with one patient ejected from the vehicle and one
patient trapped under the vehicle. Wagon 512 arrived and established
command and assisted the rescue with patient care and stabilization of
the van. At this time a second extrication unit for additional
personnel, second medic unit, and 2 Helicopters were requested by
command.
Rescue Chief 503 arrived and assumed command while PWC
PSCC Dispatched Truck 31 (Quantico), Engine 517 (LZ), Medic 517, and
Tower 513.
Rescue 510’s crew stabilized the vehicle with Res- Q-
Jack rescue struts and began to develop the extrication plan. The patient, who
was alert and talking to the crews, had fallen out of a window and the
upper half of the patient’s body was trapped under the van. Due to the
condition of the soft shoulder it created a void area where the patient
had a 2 inch area from the vehicle. Truck 31 and Tower 513 arrived and
were assigned to assist with the extrication. Truck 31’s crew was
assigned to monitor and adjust the struts and Tower 513’s crew assisted
with the extrication. With the use of air bags and hydraulic spreader
the van was lifted off of the patient then the roof was removed to
access and remove the patient. The patient was removed and to EMS
personnel for treatment. The stabilization and extrication was a total
of 40 mins.
Both patients were flown via helicopter to and area trauma center all units were clear by 0230 hrs.
