At 0321 hours on June 28th, Company 18 units were alerted to a BLS auto
accident in the area of Bacon Race Rd. and Cannon Bluff Dr. The PSCC
advised units from 18 that a caller called and advised that they heard
what sounded like a car crash in that area. While enroute, the PSCC
received several more calls on the accident advising of one overturned
vehicle. Ambulance 518 arrived on scene and reported one vehicle
overturned with one patient trapped and power lines down. The crew
quickly requested a specialty piece. Engine 518 was next on the scene
at the intersection of Bacon Race and Cannon Bluff and advised they had
one vehicle that had hit a telephone pole, overturned in a ditch with
one female patient trapped inside.
Engine 518's officer then established Bacon Race Command and requested
the ALS assignment to be dispatched. Medic 556, Rescue 510, and BC505
were added to the call. While the ALS assignment was still enroute,
Engine 518's crew took care of all hazards, including live downed power
lines in the roadway, set up lighting and pulled a protection hose
line. Ambulance 518 started patient assessment with limited access to
the trapped patient. Upon the arrival of Rescue 510, the crew quickly
implemented a plan to stabilize and extricate the patient. The rescue
crew utilized the Res-Q-Jack system, and began removing the driver’s
side to free the patient. With the driver’s side completely removed,
the patient was then removed from the vehicle. Patient care was then
turned over to Ambulance 518.The patient was assessed to have minor
injuries and was transported to Potomac ER for further evaluation. All
units were clear by 0430.
